Personal Illustration Work

Sometimes you just need to creatively stretch your legs. Here’s a small selection of more personal illustration work.

You can view a collection of my more commercial illustration work here.

Event Stickers

Each year at a local event I give away a custom-illustrated sticker to attendees. It’s a nice excuse to do some sketching, try out new illustration tools and techniques, and push outside of my comfort zone.

My first ambigram! The sticker reads the same way when rotated 180 degrees. Read more…

My unused agave illustration was a good starting point for this slightly Texas-inspired illustration. Read more…

A goofy reference to Reddi-wip and Devo. (If you’re curious, no, I do not partake. I prefer to lose my braincells by not getting enough sleep.) Read more…

Mare Internum

An animated illustration inspired by the completed sci-fi webcomic Mare Internum. To read more about the process and symbolism behind this animation, check out my blog writeup.‍ ‍2018

Polygonal Insects

This personal project began as a test drive and exploration of the line-only polygon style of illustration. Brian Steely is one of the best at this, and as a long-time fan of his work, I wanted to try it out!

I felt the almost-exact symmetry that an insect has lends itself particularly well to this style. Also, bugs are pretty rad-looking (… as long as they're not touching me). 2015

Wedding Announcement

Both my brother and sister in law are native Texans, so I used native wildflowers for the garland, using two of their their wedding colors. I chose to have my brother depicted in mostly angular, straight lines, while using curves for his fiancée. 2015

The Little Longhorn

For some years I was lucky to work with one of Austin's oldest honkey tonk dive bars, The Little Longhorn Saloon (formerly known as Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon).

From 2012 to 2016 I designed and illustrated the poster (and associated collateral: fliers, signup sheets, car labels, etc.) for The Little Longhorn's annual Memorial Day Car Show, which benefitted the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The posters were used at other local Austin businesses to advertise the event, and were also signed by Dale Watson and Ginny to be auctioned off during the car show.

You can see more about the process here: The Cadillac (2014), the TR6 (2015), the Camaro (2016).

Merch

I also created a hand-lettered illustration, applied to a small line of merch for sale in the bar. The phrase is from a sign hanging behind the bar, often said by Ginny's late husband, Don: "Ginny Says... No Fussin', No Cussin', No Hasselin', No Wresslin'." 2015
